DaVinci | Field data gathering and sketching application

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between DaVinci Desktop Standard level and DaVinci Mobile Pro?
DaVinci Desktop Standard is a basic sketching program. It's designed to run on your desktop computer and integrate with WinTOTAL. With it you can create floorplans, calculate square footage, add room labels and symbols, and draw interior walls. Keyboard commands are familiar and the sketch seamlessly integrates into your WinTOTAL report.

DaVinci Mobile Pro is a field data gathering program, in addition to a sketcher. It's designed to be used in the field, running on a Tablet PC or an Ultra Mobile PC. With DaVinci Mobile Pro, you can draw a sketch on site, using a digital pen and your own handwriting. That sketch is instantly converted into a formatted vector-based sketch that seamlessly goes into your report. But beyond that, DaVinci allows you to gather additional data elements in beyond the sketch at the same time, and that data is also seamlessly saved in your report file. This eliminates the double entry of data from the field and saves valuable time in the report creation process.

How much does DaVinci cost?
DaVinci Desktop Standard comes free with WinTOTAL. If you have a current WinTOTAL support contract, simply get your WinTOTAL updates and you'll have it available. Non WinTOTAL users can buy DaVinci Desktop Standard for $149 retail.

DaVinci Mobile Pro comes free with an Elite subscription. Non Elite customers can buy it for $249 retail.

How does DaVinci licensing work?
Licensing works the same was as WinTOTAL. You can install DaVinci on a network server as a single license and all users can use it. Mobile Pro users are licensed to install DaVinci on their portable Tablet PC in addition to their desktop PC with a single license.

What devices does DaVinci work on? What are the system requirements?
DaVinci will run on any computer running Windows XP or Windows Vista. System requirements are the same as those for the Windows OS. If you've met the system requirements for the operating system, DaVinci will run on that machine. If you want to take advantage of the digital ink/pen features that come with the Mobile Pro level, you'll need either a Tablet PC or an Ultra Mobile PC running Windows XP Tablet PC Edition or Windows Vista Business or Ultimate. You can learn more about Tablets at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/tabletpc/evaluation/about.mspx and http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/umpc/default.mspx

Can I use DaVinci on my Pocket PC?
No. Only computers running Windows XP or Windows Vista are supported at this time.

Where can I find a list keyboard commands for sketching in DaVinci?
http://help.alamode.com/appraiser/davinci/shortcuts.pdf

Does DaVinci support advanced sketching functions like re-open area, jump to corner, clone area and custom areas and fonts?
Yes. DaVinci Desktop Standard and Mobile Pro both have them. You can learn more at http://help.alamode.com/appraiser/davinci/

Can I open sketch files from other sketching programs in DaVinci?
No. Other sketch programs save files in a different and proprietary format.

How do I get customer support for DaVinci?
DaVinci is an a la mode product, so you can get support for it just like you would for WinTOTAL. Your support contract covers DaVinci, including future updates with enhancements and new features as they become available.

Are DaVinci Mobile Pro files and WinTOTAL files the same?
Yes. DaVinci Mobile Pro files are saved in the same format as WinTOTAL. This means there's no conversion of data between DaVinci and WinTOTAL. You can start a report in WinTOTAL, save it, open it in DaVinci and add a sketch and field data, re-save it, and then re-open it in WinTOTAL. All of the data is preserved and goes in its proper place in the form. This saves you valuable time and eliminates double entry of data.

Where are DaVinci files saved?
They're saved in the "My Documents\a la mode\reports" folder.

How do I move files from my DaVinci Tablet PC computer back to my office computer running WinTOTAL?
If your mobile computer can connect to your network, you can browse to the My Documents folder and manually copy the files over. But we've made it even easier than that. DaVinci also comes with built-in support for removable storage devices. This means you can plug your Flash Drive, Memory Stick or similar storage device into your computer running DaVinci Mobile Pro and it will appear as a directory in the DaVinci File Manager, allowing you to easily copy files onto it. You can do the same thing in the WinTOTAL Appraisal Desktop and copy the files off of the storage device and into your desired folder. This makes it easy to move files between the two machines.

Can I customize the data elements I need to gather when using DaVinci Mobile Pro?
Absolutely. The data gathering system in DaVinci is completely customizable. No two appraisers gather the same data elements and it's nearly impossible to define all the different room types and amenity combinations out there. So DaVinci is designed to be completely customizable. You can add/delete/change any field in the data gathering screens. You can change field formats to be anything you want - from simple checkboxes to multi-line text fields with double quicklists. You can define as many room types as you want and can add any element to any room. You may want a custom Master Bedroom that has a washer and dryer in it. It's possible with DaVinci. All the data elements you gather in DaVinci, whether it's default items or customized ones, are saved as an RTF file in the Digital Workfile in WinTOTAL.

Can I import my existing QuickLists into DaVinci Mobile Pro?
Yes, you can. You'll find an import function under the tools menu in DaVinci Mobile Pro.

Does DaVinci Mobile Pro support or integrate with a Bluetooth Disto?
Yes, it does. You can use a Disto A6 to wirelessly send measurements to DaVinci via a Bluetooth connection. Details on configuring the Disto and sending measurements can be found at http://help.alamode.com/appraiser/davinci/

What are "label links"?
With the Mobile Pro version of DaVinci, you can gather data on a room by room basis as you sketch. Room labels in the sketch are actually links to data for those rooms. Tapping on the label takes you to the data screen for the room, allowing you to easily enter information while you layout the sketch. And all the data is seamlessly saved in the report file.

Can DaVinci open files from my other sketching programs?
If you have become used to creating and editing your sketches in Apex, you may have considered switching back and forth between DaVinci and Apex as you become used to a la mode's own custom sketcher. While this is, of course, the ideal solution to the transition, currently there is no way to edit the same sketch file in both sketchers. As much as a la mode would prefer to provide this ability to you, the reality is that sketch vendor file formats are proprietary. In other words, the only ones with access to read and write to them are the vendors that create them. For this reason, Apex cannot edit WinSketch files, AreaSketch cannot edit RapidSketch files, and RapidSketch cannot edit Apex files.

As you're becoming familiar with DaVinci, if you'd like to speed the transition between Apex and DaVinci, check out our training videos and webinars on DaVinci here.
